I've been researching my family history now (on and off) for about 14 years. Those family members and distant relatives who've been following the results will know that I started off uploading to Rootsweb, with an occasional emailed newsletter.
I've now completed the move of the tree to Ancestry - which has far better research tools, and a much easier to browse tree view. The only downside is that to view the tree without signing up for a paid subscription to Ancestry, I need to invite you ... though the old (no longer updated) tree is still available at Rootsweb.
The only other downside is that Ancestry doesn't have any facilities for a newsletter or blog - so I thought I'd start one here.
I'm planning to post stories and biographies of interesting relatives in the tree here. First, I'll be bringing across the biogs I wrote back on Rootsweb and bringing them up to date.
Hi Dave, I like your blog. I am working on my connection to the Gurr family from Chatham, England. I don't know how wide your search has been in the Gurr tree, but mine emigrated to the US in 1838 and settled in Northville, Illinois. I am also looking for the connection with William Bennett who married into the Gurr family before emigrating to Illinois. I am not sure how this works, but I'm ready to try it out. Thanks, John Morgan
ReplyDeleteHi John.
ReplyDeleteIf your Northville-settling ancestors were Thomas & Martha and their son George, then we're related! If you search for them on Ancestry and ask to connect I'll grant access to the tree.
I am currently researching my family (Simpson nee Pugh) when they lived in the prefabs at 9 Fishers Avenue, Highams Park, London in the late 1940's and early 1950's. At number 12 lived Leonard J Gurr and Lilian Dorothy Gurr. Since you have carried out considerable family research I wonder if you could answer the following question? Is there a member of the Gurr family who was about 25 years old in 1950, working as a Butcher somewhere around Woodford Green, London and whose parents were officers in the Salvation Army? Thanks in advance for your reply.
ReplyDeleteHi Terry. I think the Leonard J Gurr you mention might be the Leonard John Gurr in my Ancestry tree (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/48272228/person/12882327158/facts). I'm afraid I don't have any other information on him though, as he's not on my direct line.
DeleteHi David
ReplyDeleteI'm doing my family tree and my husband's who is a Gurr -George Gurr born in Chatham 1834 is his 2nd Great Grandfather. My father in law was born in Leicester in 1928 and as both his parents died was sent to an orphanage in Scotland. I use ancestry for my tree it would be great to have access to any more information.
Regards
